Should You Go Vegan?

Listen, there is no right answer, your health is a complicated issue, I avoid meat, poultry, and pork, and most animal based foods because of the high fat content and cholesterol, but mainly because of the animal abuses on the farm and at slaughter facilities. I hate the fact that an animal has to die, humanely or not, just so I can stuff my face. So what can you do? You can start to trade out animal-based foods for natural, unprocessed, whole grains, plants, vegetables, and fruits.

Things to watch out for are cruciferous vegetables, tofu and soy, as they adversely affect the thyroid and your hormonal system, whether you are male of female. Basically, if something tastes disgusting, like tofu, don't force yourself to eat it, don't try to smother it with some sauce or something, just avoid it.

I love big salads with dressing, try the vegan dressings in moderation, or pick a lowfat dressing, as I said, try to transition, but don't beat yourself up over it. Basically, avoid meat, poultry, pork as avoiding those foods are the major areas that will promote good health and hopefully reduce the need for factory farming by reducing the demand for it.

I know bananas have a bad rep, but they are good for you and are a handy, quick breakfast on the run, and will help prevent high blood pressure and stroke.

Cover UP For Summer

While everyone is stripping down to nothing on the city streets, it's time to show some style and wear something flattering and not show off your body to every tom, dick and harry, no matter how "in shape" you are, I mean, please show some class, folks. Since when does Summertime mean being disgusting and tacky?

Don't bother copying Hollywood, as I have said on this blog more than once dearest followers, they never know how to dress and look like crap most of the time except when a dresser has them in front of a camera. Instead, page through some fashion mags or go to your trusty iPad and browse some summer wear that is flattering. Save your bare skin and bones for the beach, not on the streets [doesn't rhyme, I know].

Is This Fathers' Day?

Poor ol' dads out there, forgot about you on this style sheet. Well, what can I say. Your job in life is to make all the women or significant others in your life happy. Get out of the house everyday, make money, pay all the bills, and set up a wonderful nest for your partners and offspring. Am I sexist? Nope, just think it's great when the male figure [man or woman] in a household is the leader for the team; takes the hit when necessary, steps up to the plate or forfeits the game.

Only For Style Sheet Readers: Diet Secrets

Here is the one thing all the rich and famous know, even the rich and famous wannabees working their way up their respective ladders. Okay, what is the secret to dieting? What makes us fat? Drum roll...FOOD. Yes, eating makes you fat, all food makes you fat, it depends on quantity, quality, and if you are burning off more calories than you eat. Stop buying into all the massive marketing of movies, TV shows, books, the latest one being something from Katie Couric, the failed TV show news anchor that has been dumped onto an internet-only news show, she is scrambling for an income, so jumped on the bandwagon of knowing what makes us fat. Well, guess what, it's food.  I don't need a movie to tell me that.

Stop eating, get up and move, do a sport if you are able, and if you don't like to emerge from your home, plug in that computer and start accessing some exercise videos online. Years ago I took up weight lifting, bought them in High School, I stopped from time to time over the years, but they are always there, on the floor, and I continue to pick them up doing my favorite exercises with them. I got a book from the library so I could learn the form and exercises; it was a weight lifting book that taught basics with photos of Arnold Schwarzenegger demonstrating each exercise. Through the years I learned more exercises and always take out of my video closet "Fabio Fitness" which provides instruction on exercising with weights, and it is for men and women, so you can adjust the weight according to your fitness level. The exercises stand the test of time, it's not about being creative or hopping up and down, it's about the basics, and yes, for both men and women, start picking up those weights.

Face it, most of us, no matter how much we diet and exercise, will never look like we did in our 20's, no matter how rich or famous. But it doesn't mean you sit around and do nothing. Most celebrities no longer worry about their weight past a certain age, but, don't be discouraged. Focus on eating small portions, cut down or eliminate sugary desserts, high salt food, and fatty animal based food products. Highly active people can take in more calories than sedentary people, but get up and move your body, that is what Richard Simmons said, oh, about 40 years ago, and it is still true. Put your money in your pocket and stop buying books about diet and exercise, just do it. Walk, run, ride horses, lift weights, don't be intimidated and you will feel better and look better as a side effect.
